Bob Woolmer Pakistan Cricket Coach
In an embarrassing but forthright u-turn as to the cause of Pakistani cricket coach Bob Woolmer’s death the Jamaican police have confirmed that Woolmer died of natural causes.
Woolmer’s death put a long shadow on the World Cup championship on 18 March, following his team’s loss to Ireland in the cricket World Cup. He was widely reported as having been murdered by a combination of poison and strangulation.
His death lead to speculation he had been murdered by an angry fan or by an illegal betting syndicate. There was some concern that members of the Pakistan team may have been involved.
The incident put the Cricket World Champion matches under a dark unpleasant cloud. Bob Woolmer was a well liked and respected coach even though the loss to Ireland made many Pakistani cricket fans unhappy with him at the end of that match.
After an investigation aided by Scotland Yard Jamaican Police Commissioner Lucius Thomas said the Jamaica Constabulary Force had found no evidence “of any impropriety by players, match officials nor management”.
While Woolmer’s death was a tragic one coming after a disastrous loss everyone who cares for cricket must be relieved that foul play was not the cause.
