Japanese Precision Machine Demonstration

This Japanese precision machine demonstration serves no useful purpose that I can think of but it is certainly impressive. No telling how long it would take to set up each demonstration.

How about it all you engineering students out there? Do you think your class project can top the Japanese in their display of useless precision?

One problem often mentioned by folks worried about America remaining competitive in technology is that in the United States now we graduate only about 70,000 engineering students annually. Japan has more engineers as a proportion of its overall labor force than the United States.

In fact, relative to the size of its labor force, Japan has more engineers than any leading industrial nation except Sweden. This engineering concentration stems from the large number of engineering degrees earned at the undergraduate level in Japan.

However, things may not be as bad for the US as many analysis now fear. If a significant number of Japanese engineering students are spending their time making crazy machines of limited if any use the engineering gap is probably far less than many may think.

Then a lot of well trained engineers from especially India and China find their way to the US to join the engineering work force.  Over the years America has benefited greatly from overseas engineering know how and training.  Our entire rocket and space program was spearheaded by German rocket engineers and rocket scientists who immigrated to the US after World War Two.

The immigration of well trained technical and professional people to the US continues to provide many benefits for American society.

Whatever your views may be on this issue don’t forget to watch the video. It is a fun demonstration to see.
