Students to get Catering Guidelines
It has recently been announced from the FSA (Food Standards Agency) that the vast majority of UK students will be getting basic guidance and lessons directly from their University to cook food safely whilst living at halls of residence. Students cooking good and healthy food safely is not what people hear from the likes of University halls but that is now going to change. Small groups of people will be held responsible for looking after students whilst they are cooking on campus.
Why are the Government doing this? Firstly, it will be hopefully be teaching students the value of cooking food safely and properly and secondly it will save on damage costs on the University itself. At the moment there is literally too much damage being caused to University property and there has to be something done about it. Educating the students early on is the most effective way to learn about the value of good and safe cooking inside University property. Whilst I was studying at University keeping the kitchen in a good state was not on the top of my priorities and neither was it anyone else’s. However, Universities from across the country are now investing a fair amount of time and effort into getting safety as their primary concern. So, how are they going to do this? Setting up posters and banners in the kitchen and having monthly appraisals from the staff at the campus itself on how they are treating the residence.
Not all students are redundant in the kitchen as some people would assume. Corporate Catering courses at University have sky rocketed and more people are signing up than ever before. Wedding Caterers and Private Catering is a massive industry and more students are willing to learn about the trade. The catering work itself pays really well and is rewarding. People will naturally be interested in working in this field.
