Sinking Kangaroo Saved By Ozzy Surfer

A kangaroo that would otherwise have drowned was saved on a beach in Australia by a brave local.

Local surfer and all round extreme sports enthusiast Neil McCallum spotted an object out to sea that he had never seen before. It kept disappearing under the surface and moving very erratically. When he moved a little closer he realised that the struggling animal was a kangaroo, something that very rarely even enters the water. Neil thought quickly and grabbing one of his surfboards out he went to see if he could help the poor creature.

When he got to the Kangaroo it was very tired. It had been fighting against the waves and the current for quite some time and didn’t have much energy left. Niel did make an attempt to hoist the animal up onto his surfboard, but the kangaroo wasn’t very happy with this and jumped back into the sea. A number of people paddling kayaks were also in the area but not close enough to help. After Neil realised that this wasn’t going to work he got the kangaroo tight against his board and holding on firmly he rode the waves back to shore. Although a little worse for ware, both Neil and the roo made it back onto solid ground.

Ian is the name that has been given to the little fella, an ironic homage to Ian Thorpe. Experts however still cannot explain what he was doing in the water. “Swimming is not something that kangaroos do very well” claims Kirk Jackson of the Nature Reserve Of Queensland. They very rarely even enter water above their knees he states, but maybe this one had never been taught that by its parents.

Ian has been looked after at a local kangaroo sanctuary and his back to full fitness. He will be released soon but along way from the coast where he can’t get himself into any more trouble. As for Neil, he remains modest about the whole thing and says that he was just helping out another of God’s creatures.
