Barack Obama Campaign Funding

Barack Obama just announced that he has raised $32.5 million for his presidential campaign in the period from April to June. This is a record for any Democratic candidate.

The $32.5 million compares to $27.0 million raised by Hillary Clinton for the same time period. Obama raised $25 million in campaign funds during the first quarter of 2007.

I have commented previously on Obama’s smart Internet campaign tactics. His effort to create a grassroots campaign and spread the word by the Internet is paying off. Mr Obama said he received more than 154,000 contributions in the April to June accounting period, bringing the total number of donors to 258,000 in the first half of the year. Apparently many of these are small donors who made their contribution over the Internet.

Senator Obama still trails Senator Clinton in the opinion polls. However, his by now proven ability to attract campaign funds is a good sign for Obama in the long fight ahead.

Senator Clinton and her campaign managers must be starting to at least occasionally look over their shoulders. At this still early stage the race for the Democratic nomination looks to be much closer than I expect Senator Clinton and her supporters had counted on.
