Desertification Warning
One of the unpleasant effects of global warming and the resulting climate change is the enlargement of areas impacted by desertification.
A new report by the United Nations University suggests climate change is making desertification “the greatest environmental challenge of our times”.
It seems to me that we have plenty of “greatest environmental challenges” all occurring at about the same time but no doubt desertification is one of the most urgent ones.
The UN study indicates that up to 50 million people could be severely effected within just one decade.
Within the nest fifty years over one third of the world’s population of about 6.5 billion are expected to be effected by climate change.Â
A serious consequence of desertification is that with so many people displaced the ability of neighboring countries and areas to resettle them becomes unmanageable. Millions of displaced people wandering around trying to find a new place and way to live creates turmoil and strife.
The competition between native people and newly displaced people arriving by the millions does not bode well for world peace.
Urgent study needs to be undertaken by international organizations to attempt to head off what may become an acutely serious problem within ten years.
The world is moving into a crisis mode. In order to lessen the effects of desertification and other climate change issues a high level of international effort and cooperation will be required between all nations.
Are the world’s political leaders up to the task? Based upon recent performance the answer to that important question has to be a resounding no.
Rather than waste precious resources on useless wars the leading governments of the world had best refocus on issues that if unattended to may well lead to a degradation of life on this fragile planet for all.
That would include the “leaders” who failed in their mission to wisely lead.
