Fatah Milita Attack Palestine Parliament

The fear that the fighting between rival Fatah and Hamas forces in Gaza would spread to the West Bank has been swiftly realized.

Fatah gunmen are now storming the parliament in Ramallah. The fighting came after Fatah was ousted from Gaza by Hamas, ending a week of clashes which left more than 100 dead.

It appears that President Abbas has lost control over his Fatah militia units, if he ever had any. Only yesterday Mr. Abbas dissolved the Palestine parliament, sacked the Hamas Prime Minister, and called for new elections.

It appears increasingly likely that the civil war will have to play out with one side or the other taking full control of Palestine.

It’s difficult to have democratic elections when the rivals for power would rather shoot at each other rather than vote. President Abbas’s declarations are becoming increasingly irrelevant.

The conflict between rival forces in Palestine have made the Palestine issue even more complicated. No agreement can ever be worked out with Israel until Palestine has a government that is capable of and willing to enter into an agreement.

Even a total optimist must become depressed looking at the prospects for a lasting Mid East peace. War seems to be epidemic near the beginning of the 21st century.

Of course, if you are an arms dealer or in the defense industry times have never been better. At the expense of the misery and death of millions of people worldwide the arms profiteers are rolling in obscene profits.

War is a huge nasty worldwide business that provides a life of luxury for a few and death, misery, and destruction for many others.

There is little hope in reducing warfare when so many politicians and the elites of the world stand to profit mightily from war and large segments of national economies are involved in the production of warfare products.

    Hi Alec,
You make a good point. Fatah is not exactly my favorite organization either. A war between Hamas and Fatah is about the last thing the long suffering folks in Palestine need.
