Iraq Suicide Bombs Continue

In yet another brazen suicide attack in Iraq insurgents detonated a car bomb at a busy bus station in Karbala killing at least 47 people and wounding more than 60.

As US troops continue to build up in Baghdad the “thinking enemy” insurgents are proving that indeed they can think and are attacking less heavily defended targets outside of the city. Actually, this tactic doesn’t require too much brilliance on the part of the insurgents, it is just a natural go with the easy way to create havoc and terror across Iraq while the US patrols wear themselves out chasing after car bombers in Baghdad.

Unfortunately, as the newly deployed US troops are finding out daily car bombs are nearly impossible to defend against in a city of nearly 6,000,000. Once again today in Baghdad the insurgents exploded another car bomb at a key bridge. While the bomb didn’t seem to damage the bridge’s superstructure it did kill at least 11 Iraqis.

This is the second attack on a bridge in the past three days and may indicate that the insurgents are going after key infrastructure facilities in Iraq to further discredit the effectiveness of the Bush troop surge. The truck bomb attack partially destroyed the Sarafiya bridge in northern Baghdad on Thursday, killing eight people. At least two spans of the Sarafiya bridge were sent to the bottom of the River Tigris.

The bomb that exploded in the Iraqi parliament cafeteria last Thursday must have had a sobering effect on those who still think that the troop surge will be effective. When the insurgents manage to penetrate the security checks of one of the most heavily guarded buildings in Iraq, one located in the fortress Green Zone no less, the prospects for a successful outcome to US occupying force efforts in Iraq could not realistically be very promising.

Of course, the qualifying word “realistically” is a foreign one to the Bush continent of incompetents, headed by none other than President What’s Happening Bush himself, who have mismanaged this unwise and unholy war from the beginning.

Hubris and arrogance were destructive forces in the time of ancient Rome and Athens. Today they are proving to be just as destructive in Washington, D.C.
