Rudolph W. Giuliani 2008 Presidential Candidate
If you are a Rudy Giuliani for President 2008 fan looking for further inspiration or just want to check out a glowing biography of the Presidential candidate you need go no further than this New York City government website. This glowing account of Rudy’s many accomplishments was written before his heroic performance in the immediate aftermath of the horrendous 9/11 terrorist attack upon the World Trade Center Towers in New York City.
By his decisive immediate action in a time of crisis the then Mayor of New York Giuliani quickly raised his profile across the United States as America’s Mayor. Giuliani proved himself to be a man of action who is at his best when under pressure.
This at a time when the apparently frightened and confused President of the United States was circling around aimlessly in Air Force One, at least for a few hours choosing the personal safety of the airways over bold leadership on the ground.
Rudy Giuliani is a man who is driven to excel. Giuliani seems to thrive on crisis situations. No doubt that the man is a proven and largely successful leader. Rudy is also a man who holds some beliefs that may not sit well with the Republican base, much less the far right.
He is known to be a gay rights activist, having marched in gay rights parades while major of New York. For awhile he even shared a New York apartment with two men known to be gay. Giuliani is a pro-choice Republican, something which could negatively impact his campaign.
By his actions taken in New York, which were effective in reducing crime, you must think that he is for greater gun control although Giuliani has tried to downplay the issue.
When one examines Rudy’s personal life you get a somewhat less than exemplary picture. Rudy Giuliani has had a series of stormy relationships with women. Now married for the third time he admits to having an affair with the women who is now his third wife while still married to his second wife.
As a workaholic, challenges in his personal life should not be too surprising but still may haunt him as the campaign for President unfolds. One other issue that may cause some trouble is his judgment in suggesting former New York City Police Commissioner Bernie Kerik to the top position at the Department of Homeland Security. This issue also badly reflects on the careless vetting practices of the Bush administration. Since Giuliani was a strong supporter of President Bush Mr. Kerik was nominated to the position without much, if any, background check being conducted.
This proved to be an embarrassing moment for Giuliani and President Bush as the nomination of the colorful and troubled Mr. Kerik turned out to be a tabloid publishers dream come true. Mr Kerik “withdrew” his nomination within a few days. In a March 31 story in the Washington Post it is stated that Bernard B. Kerik has been told by Federal prosecutors that he is likely to be charged with several felonies, including tax evasion and conspiracy to commit wiretapping.
While Giuliani, the former mayor, is not in any legal jeopardy, according to legal sources close to the investigation, the fact that Kerik was a partner in Giuliani-Kerik could generate unwanted political attention for Giuliani because it focuses on Kerik’s activities while the two men were in government together and were jointly running the consulting company. The man of action has since admitted he made a mistake in recommending Kerik to President Bush.
Should Kerik be indicted, as now seems quite possible, as the campaign heats up the close association Kerik had with Giuliani will provide ample ammunition to Giuliani’s opponents in questioning his judgement as to his choice of a business partner.
Giuliani is proving to be an unconventional campaigner. Instead of driving home key points over and over again in his speeches he seems to make each one quite different depending upon his audience and his mood. While refreshing to some this may be disturbing to seasoned political operators who fear impulsive and off the cuff remark candidates in an age of instant media exposure and analysis of each spoken word.
With a historically long Presidential campaign in front of him the practice could open up Giuliani to a host of issues that are outside of his prepared talking points. Under close questioning he may not be well prepared to give in depth answers. He also opens himself up to making occasional “misstatements” that he may soon enough find himself retracting.
The bottom line with Rudy Giuliani is that he is one of the more interesting, colorful, and better qualified candidates running for President. However, his closeness to President Bush, his support for the Iraq War, and his business dealings with Kerik may be counterproductive in a long campaign. A campaign that will very likely turn nasty long before the 2008 election results are in.
As a two term major of New York, former Associate Attorney General, and former Federal Prosecutor, Rudy probably has other professional and personal luggage that the negative campaign advertising experts will find and make every effort to exploit.
It will be an uphill fight for Rudy Giuliani. However, Giuliani seems to be at his best when there is a fight on his hands so you can’t count him out. Giuliani is a man of action.
